The Portuguese shot-stopper will not be wearing the standard No.1 you usually see goalkeepers wear

All eyes have been on Wolves transfer dealings this summer, with the newly-promoted side signing virtually every Portuguese-sounding player they can think of.

Joao Moutinho, Raul Jimenez, Ruben Vinagre, Diogo Jota, among others, will all be turning out for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side this season.

But perhaps the biggest and best of them all is Portugal’s No.1 Rui Patricio, who moved from Sporting Lisbon back in June.

So naturally, we’re pretty excited to see what this side can do this season and we’ll certainly be keeping an eye on their first game against Everton at the weekend.

But as Patricio takes to the field for the first time, you might notice he’s wearing a slightly unusual number for a goalkeeper.

Instead of the ‘goalkeeper standard’ number one shirt, Patricio will be wearing the No.11 in honour of Carl Ikeme, who wore the number during his playing career before retiring this summer following medical advice.

The goalie was forced to hang up his gloves in July last year after he was diagnosed with acute leukaemia aged 32.

Thankfully, Ikeme has since confirmed on his social media that he is now cancer-free after a number of treatments.

In June, he posted: “After a year of intense chemotherapy I would like to share that I am in complete REMISSION.

“I still have hurdles to be pass to be cured, but hopefully I can move on with some normality!”

Even so, Ikeme is not expected to return to the pitch, but the Super Eagles offered him a job in their technical crew.
