DEBATE

Mateo Kovacic is expected to join the Blues on loan until the end of the season

When you have as many talented players as Real Madrid, keeping them all happy can be difficult.

Mateo Kovacic is bored of sitting on the bench and watching Luka Modric and Toni Kroos have all the fun.

The 24-year-old (rightfully) believes he is too good not to be playing regular first-team football.

Not even a Prem player yet and he’s already made Dejan Lovren cry

The Blues are expected to land Kovacic on a season-long loan with Maurizio Sarri keen on a dynamic midfield three.

The Croatian’s ball retention is world-class; his passing and dribbling are undoubtedly his greatest strengths.

Kovacic could line up alongside N’Golo Kante and Jorginho as the formidable filling of 4-3-3 formation.

The question is, would this trio give Chelsea the best midfield in the league?

You don’t get much better than this man

You can’t look past defending champions Man City when considering the Prem’s best in nearly every department these days.

Fernandinho, David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne formed a supremely effective midfield three for Pep Guardiola last season.

City actually wanted Jorginho to sit at the base of their midfield before Sarri brought his favourite pupil to Stamford Bridge.

Ilkay Gundogan may feature more this season and many expect Bernardo Silva to compete for a starting spot in a deeper role than the one he occupied at times last season.

Whatever the case, City will be favourites from the off.

Better than Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic (KJK)? Yeah, probably…

Liverpool have endeavoured to build a midfield to match their potent forward line this summer.

Fabinho and Naby Keita are expected to join Jordan Henderson in a midfield three with impressive balance.

With the Brazilian on destroyer duty, Hendo as passer, and Keita as the tireless box-to-box engine, the Reds have the assets to dominate the middle of the park.

Better than KJK? Difficult to say… fairly even, ever so slightly worse perhaps?

Fresh off an even more impressive World Cup

This time last year, Man United fans thought the signing of Nemanja Matic would unleash prime Paul Pogba.

Now they’re hoping the signing of Fred will allow the Frenchman to translate his World Cup form to club level.

Just like Liverpool, United’s new-look midfield appears balanced on paper.

Fred is comfortable in possession as well as a combative presence.

Better than KJK? It all hinges on Pogba… have to say no for now.

Who else have we got then? Spurs? They’re decent, right?

Given their stubborn reluctance to sign anyone of note, at this stage we should assume their midfield will be the same as last season.

Mauricio Pochettino preferred a double pivot of Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele with Christian Eriksen acting as creator-in-chief.

For all Dier’s effort and desire, he is somewhat limited in terms of technical ability while 31-year-old Dembele’s legs may start to weigh heavy this campaign.

Better than KJK? Nope.

Enough of our ramblings, time you had your say.
