He would definitely still get into Barca’s midfield

Making assists is a bit like riding a bike.

Once you become the greatest cyclist in history you never forget it.

OK Xavi is probably not bad at riding a bike, but during his time at Barcelona he was undoubtedly the greatest passer in the history of football.

This still makes us cry

The unassuming Spaniard orchestrated Barca’s midfield for the best part of 17 years and literally won everything there is to win.

Xavi had the power to manipulate the ball like no one had ever seen before.

Over, under, through, round Xavi had every type of pass in his arsenal and could embarrass the opponent at a moment’s notice.

If at 38 and certainly in the twilight of his career you thought Xavi might have been taking his foot off the gas, you would be very wrong.

Xavi played his 100th game for Qatari side Al-Sadd this week and he has been quietly using his elite skills on unsuspecting defenders that you have to spare a thought for.

Over the century of games Xavi has racked up 65 assists, more than one every two games and added an impressive 22 goals.

It’s like having the ultimate ringer in your Sunday league team.

During the wonder years with Barcelona and Spain Xavi wasn’t necessarily the creative spark that would be finding the killer ball, but make no mistake he was the emperor of central midfield.

A constantly buzzing metronome in midfield Xavi would beautifully link up the whole team.

Like Lionel Messi today, everything Xavi did on the pitch was pure brilliant simplicity and devastatingly effective.

We’re just glad that he is clearly still loving the game out in Qatar.
